We want you to arrive and travel within our region safely, so here are a few tips you should be aware of:

  • Colorado’s roads climb over many mountain ranges, and they’re usually called “passes”. When coming down a step pass, put your car in a lower gear to manage your speed. “Riding your brakes” all the way down a lengthy descent can cause brake failure.
  • Although GPS systems can be very helpful, be careful when driving in the mountains and rural destinations. Sometimes GPS systems do not take into account whether a road is seasonally closed, a rough 4-wheel-drive path only suitable for a high clearance vehicle and other factors. If possible, confirm your route using a paper map.
  • Carry water. Much of Colorado is arid and it is easy to become dehydrated on a long drive. Also, in the rare case of become stranded, water can be a matter of life and death.
  • Fourteener Country is teeming with wildlife – moose, elk, deer, antelope, fox and many other animals. Be vigilant about wildlife crossing the road.
  • Follow the latest news on road conditions, road closures and view live webcams of state highways and interstates at cotrip.org.
